background

After graduating in the field of chemistry, Dr. Georg Bauer carried out various analyses at the Institute of Biochemistry at the Netherlands-based Technical University Delft. The key topic was smart polymers in interference coatings. This very special know-how opened doors into the emerging field of surface sciences. His know-how and developments were ultimately licensed to DuPont.

Today he uses his expertise to develop new products, technologies and manufacturing processes for Atomic and Salomon for skis, boots and bindings where he leads a team of 32 engineers. His challenge is to transfer traditional products to the new standards of ecodesign.

we care

The board of directors at Amer Group outlined a very precise goal: Take over the leadership in environmental issues in the entire winter sports industry and set the benchmark of the CO2 balance sheet. Bauer describes in his speech the actual steps toward this goal: "We had to start with a holistic analysis where all factors of production like material, energy consumption and sustainability were measured as well as all factors of distribution, marketing and management travel."

"Some results were quite surprising and while a long term plan was fixed on one side, a lot of ad hoc decisions helped to cut material consumption, energy costs and reduce the overall footprint immediately. It was also interesting to see how fast the return of investment in most programs turned out. "

The focus on renewable energy was also a key decision from the very beginning. Now, in the second phase, each and every product is analyzed and the profile of requirements are defined for future ecodesign processes. The overall case study gives an authentic inside view into the problems, challenges and solutions on the way to the new ‘we care’ company ethics.
