Waldmeister
Bike
design: Marcus Wallmeyer
retail price: 9100 Euro
product description
Handcrafted from wood, the Waldmeister Bike is perhaps the most environmentally friendly bike on the market. More than that, however, Waldmeister also promotes a generally environmentally friendly lifestyle for design-conscious people. The German company Supernova Design created the Waldmeister Bike with the idea that if environmental friendliness becomes more fashionable, this will have a considerable impact on the environment.
The Waldmeister bike’s unique design is classy and timeless. The wood core of the frame is made of beech, a domestically grown, renewable material acting as a C02 sink by removing more than 3,500 litres of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The plywood layers of the frame — up to 100 of them — are carefully put together by hand in a process that takes much more time than automatic production but is also more energy efficient. The glue holding together the layers of plywood is water-based and ecologically harmless.
In contrast to metals, which fatigue and break after a comparatively short lifespan, high-quality plywood can withstand the vibrations arising in a bike frame without losing stability. The frame can be easily refurbished by a wood expert, and all bike parts can be exchanged if damaged. The Waldmeister frame is designed without a seat tube, giving it some vertical flexibility. Vibrations are effectively filtered out and the ride is made much more comfortable than with a traditional diamond-shaped frame.
By producing the frame in south Germany, Supernova avoids the usual long-distance transportation of bike frames from producers in low-cost countries.
