Twice
Shoe
design: Susanne Schöpka
product description
Susanne Schäpka, a student at the University of Applied Sciences, Munich, created (with support from Adidas) the first mountain-bike shoe for women. With a sole that can adapt to the differing conditions during long-distance biking, the product, called Twice, is based on a feasible technology concept. The most important element is the carbon sole, which is flexible in the front part of the shoe, and stiff in the back part. When the rider steps into the pedal, the flexible part becomes stiff, optimizing power transmission while pedalling and this way the biker’s performance. Stepping out of the pedal releases the sole’s rigidity, allowing the biker to walk comfortably while preventing injuries.
The eco-friendly, innovative materials give the shoe a very light and dynamic character, while its efficient, functional design extends its longevity. Production plans for Twice involve an eco-friendly method using wind and/or solar energy. The shoe’s design and construction use recycled or renewable raw materials, using fewer chemicals. These materials include organically tanned leather for the upper part; mesh made of PE fibre; tooling, pull tags and heel counter made from recyclable TPU (soy oil); and a lining made of natural cotton. The sock liners are PE and up to 90% recyclable, while the laces are cotton or PE.
