Birdy City Premium
design: Stijn Deferm
retail price: 1499 Euro
product description
The “Birdy” foldable bike is the cult object from the German manufacturing company riese und müller. There are Birdys 10 years and older that are still in use, and there’s even a Birdy fan club — evidently the Birdy promotes a strong product-user relationship and therefore longevity and sustainability. This is supported by Birdy’s timeless design and handmade manufacturing; no automated processes are necessary, and there are only two production stages.
Because the Birdy is foldable you can carry it around easily; it fits in your car or you can take it on public transport systems. A fancy foldable bike like this motivates people to use their bike more often. Thus the Birdy supports the environment even more than a normal bike.
In fact, the Birdy revolutionized the development of folding bikes — it’s a full-suspensded folding bike with a stiff frame which is very comfortable to ride. The Birdy is also easy to carry and store. Thanks to its easy folding mechanism, it only takes 15 seconds to collapse it to a small (79 x 61 x 36 centimetres) package that weighs just 10.3 kilograms.
The whole design says eco-friendly: All materials are fully recyclable, aluminium parts are extra lightweight and during its manufacturing process no toxic materials are needed. Moreover, remnaufacturing or refurbishing is also very common with Birdy bikes.
