Nordic Ice Skate
design: Stephen Copp
product description
When he created the EXA Nordic ice skate, Stephen Copp, a student of MŠlardalens University, Sweden, had his doubts: ice skating is a traditional sport, making innovation in this area difficult.
But as he discovered, ecological thinking can be also be factored into this “clean sport.”
Today, skates are made of two parts: the aluminium profile and the steel blade. These two materials are fused together with adhesives. EXA is environmentally friendly because it is made completely out of steel, recycled and cold rolled with Sandvik material technology in Sweden. The design is attractive to younger consumers who find Nordic ice skating a great alternative to winter sports such as alpine skiing.
EXA cuts production from eight stages to just two. They produce produce without human interference, making for good safety in production. The product is easily assembled with a binding to make a complete skate, and the thin profile allows a box for the product about 4 times thinner than conventional boxes. That means one truck on the road instead of four en route to stores.
Even better, the idea of a whole skate in one piece reduces the risk of breakage while skating. No separable parts, a vibration-dampening effect due to the one free edge and time saved during manufacturing are only a few of the things making EXA a unique product.
