Biomega
Boston
design: Jens Martin Skibsted
retail price: 993 Euro
product description
The Danish company Biomega Philosophy Aps designed their bicycle “Boston” to compete with cars, not just other bikes. Biomega believes bicycles should communicate your personality, bringing people out of their cars by the same means they were driven into the car — it’s a question of personal identification. Also, Biomega bikes are very sustainable in that they have long product life cycles.
The Boston is a hybrid of a BMX, downHill, folding and city bike. The idea is to bring some of the sturdiness of the offroad cycles into the city, while transferring some of the emotive responses of the offroad bikes to the folding bike. The 24-inch wheels are tougher than the 26/28-inch normally used for the city. Aesthetically, the bikes play on the urban image, referencing American bad-boy, adrenalin-driven culture. The cultural context of the bike is all about urban mobility. The “Boston” bike from Biomega is a high-end bike, with high quality manufacturing and low volume playing to elite sensibilities.
